Summary

As the second-largest world religion, Islam is also one of the fastest-growing religions in the United States. Since the events of September 11, 2001, there has been an increased interest in Islam and a desire for Americans to understand this faith. This book will help students comprehend the basic history and beliefs of this major religion.

Islamic Faith in America, Third Edition explores the impact of American culture, social issues, and politics on American Muslims and how Muslim Americans in turn have contributed to American culture and society. It describes Islam's role in American history and provides a glimpse into the lives of the most influential Muslim Americans. Readers will be introduced to the daily lives of Muslims in America, their connections to other Muslims around the world, and the great diversity within their community.

New and updated coverage includes:

  • The development and growth of the Nation of Islam movement
  • The reaction of the American Muslim community to the events of September 11, 2001
  • Muslims in television and film
  • The work of Islamic groups in various social welfare and community-building activities
  • The generation of Muslim Americans that grew up after 9/11
  • The challenge of American Muslims to live as Americans and as Muslims and remain true to both ideals.
