Summary

With the expansion of the country came the expansion of what people wore on a day-to-day basis in the wild frontier of the West. Having moved away from established towns and trade routes, early settlers in the American West made their own clothes out of necessity. With the eventual introduction of familiar fabrics and clothing items, the styles favored by Western settlers and their families were distinct. The American West includes coverage of the types of dress worn by various Native American peoples as well as the apparel of the gunslingers, railroad men, explorers, and cowboys of the Wild West.

Anne McEvoy was born near Manchester, England and educated at Queen Mary College, University of London. She worked in publishing for several years, specializing in theater and the performing arts, before becoming a full-time writer and editor. She works mainly in the areas of theater, dance, fashion and design, and is the author of Fashions of a Decade: The 1990s and The 1920s and 1930s in the Costume and Fashion Source Books set, all for Chelsea House. She lives in London and Edinburgh.
