Summary

Praise for the previous edition:

"This reference portrays the richness of Canada's multiculturalism and its many contributions to the world experience."—American Reference Books Annual

Canada is all too often considered a mere extension of the United States, and it is no accident that the Canadian-U.S. border is perhaps the most stable and peaceful one on earth. Most Americans know little about our quiet neighbor's unique history—from its ancient origins of First Nations peoples to the first sighting by the Norse to its full confederation in 1867 to today's social democracy in the 21st century. Now A Brief History of Canada, Third Edition, fills this gap with authoritative chapters that combine solid reference value with helpful analysis.

Beginning with the settlement and exploration of the northern North American frontier and continuing through the rise and fall of the French and British empires to the foundations of Canadian nationhood and the present day, A Brief History of Canada, Third Edition, provides unparalleled details in a single-volume reference.

Coverage includes:

  • The colonization of New France and imperial rule in British North America
  • The road to confederation
  • French-Canadian nationalism and the Quebec sovereignty movement
  • The Wheat Boom and national expansion
  • World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II
  • The Constitution Act of 1982
  • National ambivalence and polarization in the 21st century.
