About the Author(s)

Charles W. Carey Jr. teaches U.S. history and world/Western civilization at Lynchburg College and Central Virginia Community College. He has written more than 150 entries for the American National Biography as well as entries for Encyclopedia of World Slavery, Chronology of World Slavery, Encyclopedia of the United States in the Nineteenth Century, Encyclopedia of American Political History, and The New Encyclopedia of American Scandal.

Ian C. Friedman holds a B.A. in history from the University of Michigan and an Ed.M. in teaching and curriculum in the field of history from Harvard University. He is the author of Education Reform in Facts On File's Library in a Book series.
