About the Author(s)

Philip Bader holds a B.A. in literature from the University of Nebraska. He is the author of three nonfiction books, as well as numerous articles and entry contributions to reference works. Bader has served as an editor in the photo department at Salem Press where he was responsible for the research and acquisition of more than 1,500 illustrations for African American Encyclopedia. His work has provided him with a background in the writings of many different literary traditions and periods, including African-American as well as African literature.

Catherine Reef holds a B.A. in English from Washington State University, where she also did graduate work. She is the author of 35 books, including Poverty in America and Working in America, in Facts On File's American Experience set.
