Summary

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a deadly disease transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings, or saliva. Humans can contract the disease when they breathe in the virus from the air. In Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, students will learn about the symptoms of this disease, as well as the effects, treatment, and history of HPS, which was first recognized in 1993 and has since been identified throughout the United States. Although rare, it is potentially deadly, and awareness is the first step toward prevention.

Stephanie Leuenroth grew up in both Smithtown and New Windsor, New York. She earned a B.S. degree in biotechnology from Rochester Institute of Technology, and then went on to earn a Ph.D. in pathobiology from Brown University. While in graduate school, she worked on the study of inflammation as it relates to the regulation and function of the human neutrophil. She was awarded an American Cancer Society Post-Doctoral Fellowship while working at Yale University. Currently, she is Associate Research Scientist at Yale University and plans to pursue a future career in disease research and drug development. She lives in Hope Valley, Rhode Island.
