He has a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University and a master's degree from the University of Georgia, both in botany, and a Ph.D. in environmental population and organismic biology from the University of Colorado.

Terri R. Gibson holds a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Georgia. She has worked as a scientific illustrator and as a research assistant studying plant evolution, plant population genetics, plant morphology, E. coli, and HIV.
