Summary

Black Jack Pershing earned his nickname while serving as an officer in the 10th Cavalry, which was composed mostly of African American soldiers. By 1916, he was a brigadier general and was chosen to track down and eliminate the Mexican Pancho Villa after an attack on a town in New Mexico. Although this pursuit was unsuccessful, Pershing was selected to be the commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France when the United States entered World War I. Pershing's life and career are explored in fascinating detail in John J. Pershing.
