Facts On File Announces Exciting New Updates for Science Online

New York, NY, May 31, 2007 – Following on the heels of the recent redesign and update of Science Online, Facts On File is pleased to announce some exciting new enhancements to this award-winning online database.

“These new updates to Science Online reflect our commitment to stay at the cutting edge of science education and to continue to find new and innovative ways to package our curriculum-based content,” said Nicole Bowen, Facts On File’s Director of Electronic Publishing. “Our science database has become an even more current and interactive tool for students and researchers.”

New Features Include:

• “Science in the News”: Science Online will now be kept current with regularly updated science news stories. Three headlines of top stories will be featured on the home page under the “Science in the News” heading. More news stories can be found using the “All Recent News” link, which will take users to a longer list of current science headlines conveniently organized by category. The stories cover many scientific disciplines, from agricultural research to nanotechnology and weather science.

• Flash Animations: The “Focus On” feature on the home page now examines the cell through animations. These animations allow students to visually explore topics such as mitosis, meiosis, membrane transport, and synapses. Animations are searchable and appear in the “All Results” and “Diagrams & Images” search tabs.

• A Wealth of New Content:

-More Experiments, More Color: New experiments have been added, spanning a variety of subjects, all featuring visually appealing color PDFs.

-New and Updated Color Diagrams and Illustrations: More than 1,100 new color diagrams and illustrations have been added. In many cases, the color illustrations have been embedded in the text of the entries.

-New Entries: A significant number of new entries have been added from acclaimed print Facts On File and Chelsea House science titles.

• Record URLs: Entries now feature record URL links at the bottom of the page. These “persistent” links are powerful tools that consistently point to the same record, so users can easily return to or reference specific entries in the database. For example, teachers can use these links to direct students to specific essays, diagrams, or experiments for class or homework assignments.

• Record Citations: Record citations have been updated to reflect the citation style of the current edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, with the inclusion of record URLs and access dates. A “How to Cite” link at the bottom of the page explains how to use citations and also provides examples of MLA style.
